THE VIRTUAL ROSE AWARD

Another new award offered this year was The Virtual Rose Award. This award was a presentation that I chose to offer to a new cloth doll artist who met all of the judging criteria for workmanship, overall appearance and clothing design.

I was extremely pleased and honored this year to present the very prestigious and well deserved 1997 VIRTUAL ROSE AWARD to Susan Toney from Wahiawa, Hawaii (sdolls@aloha.net). Susan is a lovely and extremely talented young lady who has created one of the most unusual and extremely appealing cloth dolls that I have seen in a long time.

Her entry, "Priscilla," was a truly elegant and well designed cloth doll which featured a wide range of ethnic characteristics. Susan's special features and techniques should be a tremendous asset to her future in the selling of many of these lovely dolls.

Susan's doll making career like most doll artists started with family and friends. She enjoyed making and selling her girls because of the reaction she got from those who purchase them - Pure Joy!

They buy dolls for the feeling of enjoyment that fills them as they hold and caress each creation. To forever be young and be able to play just one last time. Making her dolls has kept her young at heart.

All of Susan's dolls have button jointed arms. She makes her own heart shaped buttons from Fimo Clay. Designs most of their dresses and the facial features are done in counted cross stitch in a variety of ethnic and eye color choices.

No two dolls are alike and each one is numbered, initialed and dated.
