ABOUT THE ARTIST
Madeline
Corey-Thomas was born in New Haven, Connecticut and reared in Amherst,
Massachusetts. Her Native American (Black-feet) and Carribean (Jamaican)
heritage have always driven her to explore other peoples and cultures.
Exposed to gifted Native American Artists as well as Caribbean Artists inspired Madeline to act upon her own artistic vision. After many months of experimentation Madeline arrived at the concept of "tribal figures". She discovered that through "Tribal Images", she was able to express the grace, energy and beauty displayed in indigenous people.
The fabrics and materials used in making her figures are for the most part those which are used by native peoples- skins, furs, feathers, beads, bones, porcupine quills and shells to name a few. Madeline enjoys using these materials as they express the ties to the natural world inherent in all indigenous people.
As she has evolved, Madeline has become more creative with native costumes, molding them with her own personal visions. Her visions are becoming more diverse, and more expressive as she reveals the beauty of tribal peoples.
Madeline's work can be found in museums, galleries, and shops in the South as well as the Northeast. She participates in juried art events throughout these regions.

Artist Statement Tribal people have always intrigued me. Their connection to the natural world expresses a harmony which most modern people have lost. I enjoy the tactile sensation of natural substances. For me they emit a certain energy. As a child I would fill my pockets with stones, horse-chestnuts, hickory nuts, pine cones, fallen bird egg shells and more. Now I understand that I had a strong connection to these treasures and have never outgrown the love of them. Now I utilize these treasures in my art. Still collecting them, not knowing how they will be utilized, but at a later time they will tell me where and how they would like to fit into a particular image. It is evident to me now that the love of these treasures is coming through me as my ancestry dictates. Madeline Corey-Thomas |
